In 2020, a new plague overcame humanity. A mysterious virus emerged fom a dark bat cave somewhere in rural China and took over the world. From the ensuing confusion rose the unrest in the streets of Luxembourg.

Sven Becker and Gilles Kayser spent weeks documenting the protests that took place in the capital against the measures taken by the authorities to curb the spread of coronavirus. Tensions first erupted on December 4 after a group of protesters stormed the Christmas market on Place de la Constitution, bypassing covid regulations and catching police forces off guard. A week later, on December 11, there was a massive police deployment at Glacis —an area designed specially for protesters to demonstrate— that included water cannons and headcount loaned by Belgium and resulted in an escalation in violence and 19 arrests. Things came to a head on January 16, when police pinned down protestors gathering at Gare, outside of the designated area, in an intermittently violent standoff that lasted for hours and resulted in 30 arrests, out of which 16 will be prosecuted. Since then, violence de-escalated and the protests, now official and registered with the authorities, took place in the appointed area between Glacis and place de l’Europe.

Sven Becker’s work turns mostly around documentation, in fields like socio-political and cultural themes, social cohesion and as well in contemporary events.

Gilles Kayser is a self-taught photographer whose work is largely documentary and chronicles both current social and political issues as well as everyday life.
