Erpelding & Mevis spent a few weekends away from the capital’s overpriced coffee shops & vegan eateries, immersing themselves in the tight-knit community of Stock Car Racing.
The rules are simple: drive around a field while tossing & turning each other upside down. Rather than focus on the action itself, both photographers turned their lenses to the atmosphere surrounding the race. They captured a world where multiple generations enjoy an event that has remained steadfast in its traditions. Here, the roaring sound of combustion engines is still loud and the mettwurst comes without a side of avocado toast. Stock Car Racing is a way of life.
Marc Erpelding enjoys being an observer guided by colours, light, structures, and above all, people. As a photographer he is particularly interested in how individuals blend into a given setting – that juxtaposition of people against their surroundings. Dirk Mevis picked up a camera at age 12 and has been in love with the medium ever since. During a work-related stay in the United States from 2008, his passion for street photography flared up.
