Every time I went to the “Konsum” I went there with my grandfather. He would put on his suit and hat, as one does when going to “the city”, fire up his blue Talbot, and head to Bonnevoie.

The Coopérative des Cheminots (the railroad workers’ cooperative) was Luxembourg’s largest supermarket when it opened in 1970. It had 60 parking spaces – on the roof! As you stood there with your shopping cart, waiting for the elevator to take you straight down into the store, cargo planes would roar overhead on their final approach.

"Everything must go" is a documentation of the end of a very specific part of Luxembourgish history.

Sven Becker is a photojournalist working for d’Lëtzebuerger Land. Based in Luxembourg, he is a close observer of social change.

He picked up a camera in 2007, just as Luxembourg’s cultural scene was reinventing itself. Basements, bars, and converted warehouses became his first classrooms – documenting music, youth culture, and a generation determined to shape its own space.

Since 2013, he has worked independently, covering international events such as the Gezi Park protests and the Gilets Jaunes movement in Paris.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, he documented life inside hospital wards as well as protests opposing government vaccination measures, capturing the tension and fractures running through society.

Between major events, his camera turns to everyday realities – street life, cultural shifts, quiet moments, and the many untold stories unfolding in public space.

His work is defined by proximity, empathy, and a sharp instinct for the human stories behind political realities.
