Running a marathon is one of the last big challenges left to normal humans. It’s more affordable than climbing Mount Everest and less deadly than swimming with sharks. The 6 major marathons is something of a mythical quest that even the average Joe can conquer, given the right amount of dedication. In that sense, marathons are the ultimate individualist capitalist endeavor. A way one can realize their ultimate dream, and is (almost) fully in control.
No wonder marathons have become so universally popular. Beyond the benefits and joys of sport and running, they carry this mythical quality, the stuff legends are made of, in a world of automated boredom.
Nikita Teryoshin captures the absurdities produced by this phenomenon, the modern day drama, the limitless bliss and the crash at the end.
Nikita Teryoshin, based in Berlin, was born in St Petersburg, Russia, in 1986. When he was 13-years old he moved with his family to Dortmund, Germany, where he went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Photography. He graduated with his first long term project Hornless Heritage (2014 – 2017) which focused on the matrix-like world of the German dairy cow industry.
His project Nothing Personal – The Back Office of War has received global recognition and has been exhibited in many places across Europe.
His work – which he describes as “street, documentary & everyday horror” – has been awarded the World Press Photo 2020 first prize in the Contemporary Issues category, nominated for the Picture of the Year, awarded the Miami Street Photography Festival 2019 first prize in Series, World Report Award first prize at Fotografia Etica 2020 (Italy), and became Leica Oskar Barnack Award finalist 2021.
Teryoshin‘s personal projects have been published in VICE, Le Monde, ZEIT Magazin, GUP Magazine, It’s Nice That, WIRED, Internazionale and Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin.
