A traveler never used to leave much of a trace as they moved around, not so long ago. For the first 12 years, from 1974 to 1986, I didn't possess a credit card (and mobile phones didn't arrive until 1995), and so everything was paid for in cash. If you needed to let anyone know where you were, or where you might be, you wrote a letter. A telephone ringing was a land line and it was always for someone else. GG
